This creation is the opening title sequence of Steven Spielberg’s film Catch Me If You Can, featuring Leonardo DiCaprio, Tom Hanks, and Nathalie Baye.
My role : My very first job in CGI, as a Compositing Assistant.
Kuntzel+Deygas created their first title sequence in response to Steven Spielberg’s desire to immerse the audience in the 1960s atmosphere right from the beginning of the film, allowing him to launch the story without the need for preliminary exposition.
To achieve this, Kuntzel+Deygas imagined themselves as young designers working in the 1960s, alongside emerging figures like Paul Rand, Saul Bass, and Pablo Ferro—while still maintaining their own distinct style and creative process. As a result, the heart of this title sequence was crafted by hand using organic tools such as paper, ink, and traditional frame-by-frame animation.
To preserve a contemporary feel—reminding viewers that this is a modern creation—the raw, hand-made elements were subtly integrated into sophisticated CGI work.
The sequence is beautifully enhanced by the original score, composed by John Williams, who wrote the music directly to match Kuntzel+Deygas’s montage.
For global audiences, the result evokes the feeling of a lost paradise. And if this title sequence never won an Oscar, it’s only because the Academy doesn’t have a category for Title Design—yet.
